In the early 1890s he wrote numerous historical romance novels set in Britain and Europe under the pseudonym Hilarion, often prefacing them with lengthy dedications to members of the aristocracy. A second volume of short stories Grafin Rinsky and Other Tales was published in 1892, and McKellar's series of monologues and one-act dramas were collected in The Old Stradivari and Other Dramatic Sketches in 1894. The Premier's Secret and Other Tales was his only work to be published in Australia.
