Summary

Few details are available about Michaelis' life. He was born in Sydney, and Stephen Knight refers to him as 'a little-known Sydney writer and sportsman' in the introduction to his anthology Dead Witness: Best Australian Mystery Stories (1989), as well as quoting from a letter 'from his widow Mrs Jean Rylance,' which states Michaelis was 'a devotee of Sherlock Holmes and, for his own pleasure, decided to try his hand at writing detective fiction himself.'
